Snow blizzard.

Kamchatka is a land of winds. There are often snow blizzards even with clear skies above. That happens when strong wind is dragging large masses of snow from one place to another in open tundra. In temperatures way below freezing these blizzards pose a serious challenge for humans. I have been knocked down by the winds several times while walking in this weather. This is the best weather to get yourself frostbites all over the face. Even opening eyes is a challenge…

Snow blizzards are just as difficult for animals… Especially given the fact that they don’t have cabins heated by fireplaces…

New looks of autumn here.

The wind and rain of the past several days has left some of yellow leaves on trees. Maybe just to create this contract between the white, snow covered volcanos and reddish trees underneath. The landscapes are unbelieveably beautiful.

Today, my companion and I spend considerable amount of time trying to find a spot along the lake coast without bears, but we did not succeed. So here it is, this is how the Ilyinskaya Sopka volcano really looks now.

Below are the photos from the first evening after the storm. The storm that brought all that snow and decorated the mountain tops with it.

It is raining but we keep working!

Rains are common in Kenozero area - every evening we get summer showers and beautiful rainbows. This weather may be attractive for visiting photographers, but local people need to store hay for long winter. They are not impressed with dramatic weather. They cock hay in regular stacks in dry weather, and when it's rainy, they make "zarods" - that are long and narrow stocks that are very well ventilated so hay finishes drying in them. Zarod's are ricked even during white nights to finish before rain. Damp hay sometimes mix with salt - locals say that cows find it tasty.
