Golden eagle that ate too much.

This golden eagle has fought and won a salmon from a Steller’s sea eagle and has eaten half of the fish. He cannot eat any more. It simply does not fit… So the eagle is sitting on top of the fish remains, dozing and swinging from side to side; his eyes are clearly bleary of too much food… But he does not want to leave his catch unattended: as soon as leaves other birds will immediately finish it…

This picture was taken at the Lake Kurile in winter of 2007. I wish I could be there now…

See you in spring, Masha... Sleep well!

During past week bear-mothers with cubs have dissappeared from the lake, they departed to their winter dens. It is about time, the temperature is And even most of pregnant female bears are gone now, including Masha. Adult males, especially older ones will remain on the banks of the lake and rivers until late December and even January fishing.

Meanwhile Misha seems to be very sad without his girlfriend. All through the fall they were playing like cubs while other bears were behaving rather boring. No wonder Misha is missing Masha... See their games below!

Ready for winter!

This is a bear-mom with her nearly one-year-old cubs...

Misha and Masha.

Misha and Masha are the adult bears that live near my ranger station here at the Kurile Lake. I am watching them play and hunt together every day. Usually, adult males do not socialize with anyone. They are animals-egoists, animals-individualists. Misha is an exception. He is very friendly with all his neighbors; he is always the one to starts all the friendly animal games. And he is especially friendly with one female, Masha. They spend a lot of time together, even at rest. I am almost certain that these are my good acquaintances from four years ago: a brother and a sister.

A couple of bear cubs appeared near this ranger station in the summer of 2008. Most likely they just got separated from their mother. Other adult bears were scaring them off, so the children found protection near the humans. They were always together, even in their sleep they were cuddling up to each other. Since then I have only visited these places couple of times, and did not know how were they doing. Masha must have brought up one litter, and now she is pregnant again. Misha has mastered fishing and have grown to a very respectful size (males are larger than females, and they grow until age of ten). Their behavior, however, remained the same. They still sleep and play together right next to our ranger station. I can often see them play from my window or the porch.

Below are the photos of Misha and Masha from 2008.

Is there an overpopulation problem?

It is becoming "bearier" and "bearier" over here. The bears concentration around the lake is amazing. Never in my previous visits I have seem so many of them. It makes me think that this is how a famous explorer of Kamchatka, Stepan Krashennikov, must have seen these places, abundant with wildlife. Without tremendous anti poaching efforts Southern Kamchatka Wildlife Refuge workers it wouldn't be possible.

On the other hand, just being outside has become a high-adrenaline activity. We hope that soon at least some of these bears will depart to their hibernation dens.

Everything is as usual here...

Another cold and rainy day. But the bears don't care. They swim, eat, sleep and play. Last night one hooligan managed to crawl under electric fence around the station and chew one of our new inflatable boats. After the rain is over we'll fix it.

For a long time I was watching after this couple of bears (photo above and here) and finally understood that it is most likely Masha and Misha, my old acquaintances from several years ago. They both matured, and Misha, finally, mastered the art of fishing.

The winter is coming and less and less leaves are left on the trees.

Easy catch.

A story about how we were taking a photo of a volcano one morning...

We were waiting for the morning light to illuminate Ilyinsky volcano when Adam (introduced here) took this shot and gave it to me as a present. Thank you very much Adam. Afterwards, the bear "ruined" all my photo plans... He entered the composition and sat there in a meditation pose.

In order to pay back to Adam I took a picture of him as well.

6 cubs and one mother-bear?

_DSC8031

If you count the cubs on this photo, you'll see that it is truly 6 cubs and one adult female bear. How is it possible?

The truth is, it is simply two bear families, two female bears with 3 cubs each! The mothers are very polite with each other, without any fights, allowing children to interact.

And this is "Dikiy Greben" (Wild Crest) - the nearest volcano to our ranger station. This is a largest lava dome in Kamchatka, 18 cubic kilometers in volume. It is a real chaos made of stone by cooling lava. The highest point of this volcano is called Unpleasant point, it is 3540 feet above the sea level.
