On the top of Krasheninnikov volcano.

I just got back from Krasheninnikov volcano.

My shoulders and legs are sore from the overload of climbing up and down. But there, from a single point I could see half of Kamchatka peninsula: from volcanos near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the south to Klyuchevskaya Sopka in the north. I will tell you later about marmots that live in the harsh climate of Krashennikov volcano caldera: to record their population was the main reason for this trip.

But for now, I wanted to share with you a view from the top of this volcano: behind the northern crater you can see Kronotsky lake with islands on its surface, and farther away, on the very horizon, Kizimen volcano continues its eruption.

First berries have ripen!

Even though the summer has started here in Kamchatka, it is very modest and "unobtrusive". Today was the second clear day this month that we saw sunlight and nearby volcanoes. Despite the news there is nothing unusual happening to Kizimen volcano, it looks like it continues emiting the volcanic ash in moderate amounts.

Also, on the moss marshes, the cranberries are in blossom (the top photo) and the crowberries have ripen, the clowdberry is almost there too. The flocks of woodcock-berry-pickers have started to appear, this is what people call curlews that are migrating south now.

Clowdberry is almost ripe.

Dog rose blossom - this is a phenological indication of start of summer.

Hunchback salmon shoals are coming higher and higher upstream of Kronotskaya river, and the bears are following them. 

I found out that crowberries has ripen from the bear's dropping. 

First mushrooms appeared in nearby tundra, but I only recognize brown cap boletus and russules among the eatable species. For example, I am not sure how are these mushrooms called.

About Kizimen Volcano.

Almost every day my friends ask how is Kizimen eruption affecting me and my neigbors (i.e. foxes, bears and other animals). The information presented in media is very confusing.
Three days ago I went to Kronotsky Lake from the stretch of which I could see the top part of Kizimen. Visually, nothing is different here - the giant keeps erupting. The ash cloud is coving significant part of the horizont, but I can not see details behind this cloud.

Nevertheless the spring is in full blossom on the heavily covered with ashes lake banks.

Rage of Kizimen volcano continues.

Вчера спустился с гор на свой приморский кордон. Опять весь в вулканическом пепле от Кизимена.
Сложное чувство... Нет ощущения белого безмолвия.  Ландшафты серо-коричневые, мрачноватые даже на солнце, если оно пробивает пепельную дымку.  Красиво, как все в дикой природе, но красота мрачноватая. При всех передвижениях пытаешься  учитывать направление ветра, чтобы не оказаться в пепельной туче - и все равно оказываешься. 

Зимние маршрутные учеты завершены. Напоследок мне довелось поучаствовать в авиаучете (вертолет прилетал на Кроноцкое озеро) диких северных оленей. Существование  этих еще недавно обычных на Камчатке животных вызывает большие опасения.  Предварительные данные зимних учетов говорят, что извержение Кизимена стало настоящим бедствием для  них. Слои пепла покрыли лучшие для зимовки оленей места - горные тундры в центре заповедника, и часть животных была вынуждена откочевать за пределы охраняемой территории в поисках чистых от пепла пастбищ. В охотничье-браконьерские места, откуда им немного шансов вернуться в живых...

У нас на кордоне продолжается пепельная мгла от извержения Кизимена на фоне двадцатиградусного мороза и ветра 10 - 15 метров в секунду. Сейчас вулканологи отмечают резкое увеличение количества сейсмических событий (под сейсмическими событиями понимается выброс из вулкана пирокластических бомб, сопровождающийся локальными землетрясениями). За последние три дня их число возросло с 200–300 до 1200 событий в сутки.
«Одним из вариантов развития событий может стать сильный взрыв, который разрушит конус Кизимена», — сказал Ярослав Муравьев, заместитель директора по науке института Вулканологии и сейсмологии ДВО РАН. По другому предположению — вулкан начнет изливать вязкие лавовые потоки. Ученые также не исключают вероятность того, что исполин «проработает» в прежнем режиме еще несколько месяцев.  Уж не знаю, какой вариант для нас предпочтительнее..
