Golden eagle that ate too much.

This golden eagle has fought and won a salmon from a Steller’s sea eagle and has eaten half of the fish. He cannot eat any more. It simply does not fit… So the eagle is sitting on top of the fish remains, dozing and swinging from side to side; his eyes are clearly bleary of too much food… But he does not want to leave his catch unattended: as soon as leaves other birds will immediately finish it…

This picture was taken at the Lake Kurile in winter of 2007. I wish I could be there now…

White birds.

Two large white birds live in my backyard and fish in my pond nowadays. The stork (right) was brought in by people. He was misfortunate to get caught in abandoned water tower not far from Suzemka. We do not know how he got in and how long was he there without food or water. He became so week, that he was not able to follow other storks that migrated south in a second half of August. Even now, after a week of nourishing diet he still doesn't fly.

And egret (left), a rare bird for Bryansk region, came by himself: he got interested in abundance of fish in the pond. He learned that the dog and people are not posing a danger here, and now he is always full. The migration south for egrets will start later.

Wind of change...

All my things are packed. Backpacks and boxes are stacked in the middle of the ranger station, that sudennly became empty. This small and simple cabin in the middle of unpopulated tundra in Kronotsky Nature Reserve was my home for over a year.

But local spirits are not in a hurry to let me go. They bring either storms, or heavy rains and fogs to prevent safe helicopter landing. But as soon as the weather permits I will be taken from here. This evening the wind calmed down and on the west the sky cleared out. There is a chance that tomorrow I will find myself in civilization after the longest and most productive expedition of my life.

Autumn spirits.

Just several days ago it was crowded at my ranger station: family, colleagues, research staff. And now I'm alone again.

Just several days ago it was summer here. And now it is the beginning of northern autumn: first snowfalls in the mountaintops, first red and yellow leaves in tundra, flocks of birds gathering for migration.

Even the air tastes like autumn too, filled with smells of dry grass and mushrooms.

A feast before departure.

Good morning from Kronotsky Nature Reserve!

From the beginning of August large flocks of woodcock-berry-pickers arrived here. The tundra is full of simple whistles melodies every sunrise. These birds are fattening on rich local berries before continuing their migration south. The crow-berries are especially plentiful this year.

The red-colored "poachers".

From far away I noticed that Mr. Sneaky Evildoer was carrying a duckling that he caught in the Kronotsky nature reserve. So I quietly sat on the sand and ceased to move, hoping to photograph him “red-handed”. But this old “poacher” is hard to trick! He sensed me too, carefully hid his prey in the grass and came out in the open “with clean hands”. Three times he passed me with his honest eyes as if saying: “Here, take as many pictures of me as you wish!”. And only after I left he went back to his hidden duck. Such a sly fox!

But my naïve and open-hearted neighbor, Alisa, was caught on camera today with the undisputable evidence!

Alisa was carrying a mouthful of nestlings together with the nest.

And this skillful fox managed to catch a big salmon in the shallow part of estuary.

Summer already?

Today was the first day I was bitten by mosquitoes! So from this point on I will tag my entries as “summer”. Some meteorologists think that the summer starts when the average temperature during 24 hours goes above 59F. Well, here the temperature goes above 59F only in my cabin, which I keep heating up every day.

Alisa, my female fox neighbor, is on the picture above. She has just caught a ground squirrel and is carring it to her cubs in the burrow. Today I finally found out that she is living in a burrow that over past years was occupied by another couple, Cosmo and his ex-wife, Cosimina. I say ex-wife, because now Cosmo is still living in this burrow, and I haven’t seen Cosimina since the beginning of May. Meanwhile Alisa and Cosmo have little cubs that just started to peep out from their fortress. How many of them – I don’t know.

The reason is that Cosmo has his own views on a subject of «private property». Mr. and Mrs. Evildoer, for example, are very tolerant to my presence near their burrow, but Cosmo... Every time I am anywhere near his island in the marshes he becomes hysterical. He starts heartrending howls demanding me to leave. And I leave, offended. It is not fair that he can peer into my windows every day, but I can’t even come close?... But maybe I should not be offended, it’s just his personality, he even protects his burrow from butterflies and bumble-bees!

Under summer rain.

It is raining nonstop for four days here. The rain is light and relatively warm; it is transforming the dull cheerless landscape of tundra to beautiful summer colors.
